The Alpine Flora by Henry Correvon & Philippe Robert — English translation & enlarged by E. W. Clayforth, Methuen & Co., London (1911) With 180 full-color watercolour plates and 426 pages plus index. This edition is scarce and quietly remarkable—not for its rarity alone, but for the vivid botanical artistry that makes it a visual treasure. The 180 plates by Philippe Robert—rendered in delicate watercolours—give life to alpine blooms with precision and soft, natural vibrancy. Each study captures not only the flower’s structure but its mood, as if freshly gathered from high meadows. Written by Swiss botanist Henry Correvon—who was a pioneer in Alpine horticulture and conservation—Alpine Flora describes mountain plant habitats and each species in thoughtful detail. (Correvon’s work inspired many early alpine gardens in Switzerland and beyond.) Condition notes: ex-library copy, seam split between back pastedown and front endpaper (see gallery image), inscriptions or annotations on front pastedown and facing the title page, page before preface is missing. Otherwise 426 pages plus index present, text block secure. This edition stands out for its plates—more botanical art than textbook. The color reproduction is carefully done, and the botanical notes are both thoughtful and informative—a lovely way to explore alpine flora from the page. Happy to discuss shipping options!
