1925 First Edition — The Story of the Women’s Institute Movement in England & Wales & Scotland by J.W. Robertson Published by The Village Press, Great Britain, 1925. This is the first edition of J.W. Robertson’s work documenting the early history and growth of the Women’s Institute (WI) across England, Wales, and Scotland. The book contains 290 pages, including an appendix and index, with various black-and-white images throughout. Bound in blue cloth with gold gilt lettering on the spine. There are front scratches and bumps to the edges of the front panel. All pages remain secure to the hinge and are free of markings except for the previous owner’s name written on the front pastedown and endpaper. Founded in Britain in 1915, the Women’s Institute aimed to revitalize rural communities, support wartime food production, and provide women with educational and social opportunities. By the time Robertson wrote this book, the movement had become an influential grassroots organization advocating for women’s voices in public life, rural development, and community welfare. Robertson’s account serves both as a chronicle of the movement’s rapid growth and as a reflection of early 20th-century social change. His writing captures the organizational spirit of the WI, from village meetings and skill-sharing to campaigns that improved everyday life for rural women. Happy to discuss shipping options.
